Counselling Cell
Counselling Cell
The counselling cell of the university has been functional from July 2018. The Counselling cell is executing its duties from the University Student Counselling Cell. School level counselling cells are functional in each school. The functions are carried out under the supervision of the Professor in psychiatry who acts as the chairperson,Counselling.
Students come from varying backgrounds and each individual carries their experiences along with them. Everyone faces problems/obstacles and everyone deals with it differently. Some are able to cope some aren’t. This is a space where students can discuss the difficulties faced by them or share their thoughts about a situation which requires clarity. We assist students to assess their abilities, identify & overcome problems, adjust better and enhance their overall mental health. The Counselling Cell strives to help students overcome mental health challenges /obstacles. We want every student to feel inclusive, protected and cherish their life here and later on.
Students can approach the counsellors to discuss any issue that’s bothering them. The counsellors after assessing the issue provide individual counselling sessions. The duration and number of sessions are decided based on the issue. The counselling cell intends to create a comfortable environment for the students so that they can open up without any apprehension. The Counselling cell has been established to enhance their mental health , reduce their stress and to nurture a conducive environment for growth and success.
OBJECTIVES:
Some of the areas explored in the cell are:

Counselling Services
What is counselling?
Counselling is an opportunity to discuss your thoughts and feelings about any issue that you face in every-day life that you may wish to explore and understand better, in a professional and confidential setting.
Who is it for?
Counselling is for everyone, every individual has the right to access mental health
How confidential is counselling?
The information provided by the student is highly confidential and it isn’t shared or discussed with anyone without the consent of the student.
Are counsellors problem solvers?
Counsellors are NOT advice givers or problem solvers rather they are professionals trained with skills and competencies that facilitate an individual to gain awareness, growth and transformation through a warm & understanding relationship. There is no magic solution or specific advice. Every individual and their life situation is unique and therefore there can never be a ‘one size fits all’ solution.
Counselling and Psychiatry
Counselling bears little relation to psychiatry except that both deal with emotional and mental processes. Psychiatrists are trained doctors, who work largely through diagnosis of illness and then by prescribing a treatment – usually involving medication. Counsellors are normally non-medical personnel who work by talking and encouraging you to find your own solutions. Counsellors can however recognize the symptoms of severe mental distress, and may suggest you to consider medical help if seems appropriate.
